The grid beneath

Every plan begins as a square.
Long before drawing boards, a site on this subcontinent was set out with the vāstupuruṣamaṇḍala — a square subdivided into equal cells, or pada. Thirty-two schemes are named; the two in common use are the maṇḍūka of sixty-four cells and the paramaśāyika of eighty-one, whose open centre, the brahmasthāna, is the middle three by three. It is codified in the śilpa and vāstu treatises — the Mānasāra, the Mayamata, the Bṛhat Saṃhitā — post-Vedic technical literature, written by builders for builders.
It was never ornament. It was setting-out: cords stretched on the ground, which is why the master builder is the sūtradhāra, the holder of the cord. Charles Correa built the Jawahar Kala Kendra on a nine-square maṇḍala in 1986 and proved the point for the modern era — you engage this geometry in the plan, not in the decoration.
